Things You Might Not Know About Alzheimer

World Alzheimer's Day

Can you ever imagine what would happen if your brain shrinks and your brain cells die? This is exactly what Alzheimer’s disease leads to. Being a progressive neurologic disorder, Alzheimer is the most common cause of dementia. It is a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills which directly affects a person’s ability to function independently.

Forgetting recent events or conversations can be an early sign of the disease. Alzheimer’s disease can cause severe memory impairment and loss of the ability to carry out everyday activities.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease

Loss of Memory is the key symptom of Alzheimer’s disease. Initially a person with Alzheimer’s disease may be having difficulty remembering things and organizing thoughts.

Brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease lead people to:

  • Repeating questions and statements over and over
  • Forgetting conversations or events, and not remember them even later
  • Getting lost in familiar places
  • Routinely misplacing possessions and putting them in different locations
  • Have trouble in expressing thoughts, finding the right words to identify objects, or take part in conversations
  • Eventually Forgetting the names of family members and regular objects
  • Trouble with thinking and reasoning
  • Having difficulty concentrating and thinking about abstract concepts such as numbers.

Other associated problems are like:

Making logical judgments and decisions

The ability to make reasonable decisions and judgments in everyday situations is declined by Alzheimer’s. For example, a person may make weird choices in wearing inappropriate clothes according to the weather or poorly reason while having social interaction. It may be more difficult for them to respond effectively to everyday problems, such as burning of food or other unexpected situations.

Planning and performing familiar tasks

As the disease progresses carrying out routine activities that require sequential steps, such as planning or cooking a meal becomes a struggle.  Eventually, people tend to forget how to perform basic tasks such as bathing and dressing.

Changes in personality and behavior

Brain changes affect moods and behaviors in Alzheimer’s disease and give birth to problems like:

Depression

Social withdrawal

Apathy

Distrust in others

Mood swings

Changes in sleeping habits

Irritability and aggressiveness

Delusions

Wandering

Loss of inhibitions

Preserved skills

Alzheimer’s Day is observed on the September 21 annually all over the world intended to raise awareness about the neurological disorder. In today’s date, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. It affects the person’s mental ability, memory, and ability to carry out simple tasks. The theme for World Alzheimer’s Month chosen for this year is ‘Know Dementia, know Alzheimer’s’. PSR stands here to raise the awareness about Alzheimer’s. This year, let’s choose the best help for our dear ones. Reach out to doctors and moderate the conditions before worsening.
